Minnesota’s wilderness is home to one of the largest wolf populations in the lower 48 states—and while these apex predators are a natural part of the ecosystem, their growing numbers have raised serious concerns for Minnesota deer hunters. That’s why the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association (MDHA) helped launch the groundbreaking community science initiative: Wolf.Report.
What is Wolf.Report?
Wolf.Report is a boots-on-the-ground project designed by hunters, for hunters. MDHA was instrumental in developing this initiative with the goal of educating the public, gathering real-time data, and highlighting the impact wolves are having on our whitetail deer population and hunting opportunities across the state.
Through Wolf.Report, hunters, landowners, and outdoor enthusiasts can submit sightings, trail camera images, tracks, kills, and other signs of wolf activity. This growing database helps paint a clearer picture of where wolf populations are thriving—and where deer numbers are falling.
Why Does This Matter to Minnesota Deer Hunters?
If you’ve spent any time in the woods over the past few years, you’ve likely noticed some changes. In many parts of the state, deer populations are declining, and hunters are reporting fewer sightings, more wary behavior, and changes in herd dynamics. While many factors contribute to this, increased wolf predation is undeniably part of the equation.
The data collected through Wolf.Report is being used to:
